Controls in FMEAs

Controls are Synthesis resources that can be used multiple times in different locations, if appropriate. Any changes made to the control properties will be reflected in all locations where the same resource is used.

Controls will be available in FMEAs only if the Enable Controls for Causes option is selected in the current project's interface style. They can also be created and used in control plans and PFD worksheets.

The following topics are discussed here:

Adding and Inserting Controls in FMEAs

To add or insert controls into the FMEA, select the Controls node under the relevant failure cause — or another control that's already defined for that cause — and choose FMEA > FMEA Records > Controls then select one of the following options:

Add Control adds a new record to the bottom of the list for this cause.

Insert Control inserts a new record above the one that is currently selected.

Add Existing Controls opens the Select Resource window so you can choose one or more of the existing resources to use again in the current location.

Replace with Existing and Make Unique

If you have selected an existing control, the following options may also be available:

Replace with Existing opens the Select Resource window so you can choose a different resource to be used in the current location.

Make Control Unique creates a new resource that is no longer associated with (linked to) the existing one. The description of the new resource will be incremented automatically so it remains unique (e.g., "Do this and that" might become "Do this and that_1").

Copying and Pasting Controls in FMEAs

If you have copied a control, there are two options when you choose Home > Clipboard > Paste:

Paste (CTRL+V) pastes another instance of the same resource into the new location.

Paste as Unique (CTRL+SHIFT+V) pastes a new record that is no longer associated with (linked to) the existing resource. The description of the new record will be incremented automatically so it remains unique (e.g., "Do this and that" might become "Do this and that_1").

Deleting Controls from an FMEA

To delete a control from a specific location in an FMEA, select the control and press Delete or right-click the control and choose Delete from the shortcut menu.

This removes the control from the current location, but the resource remains in the project so it can continue to be used in other places. If a resource is not being used in any other locations, an authorized user (i.e., the project owner or any user with the "Create/edit/delete all resources" permission) can delete it via the Resource Manager.

Control Properties

The properties enabled in the Control window (and their display names) will depend on the interface style for the current project. To view or change these settings, choose Project Management > Configurable Settings > Interface Style.

Note the following:

In the FMEA worksheet view, these controls can be displayed in either one or two columns depending on the project’s settings for the Number of Controls in Worksheet View option in the interface style.
