By applying different number formats (e.g., percent, scientific, fixed, date, etc.) you can change the appearance of a number in the current spreadsheet without changing the number itself. Except for when the Precision as Displayed option is selected in the Calculation Options window, the number format does not affect the actual cell value used to perform calculations. For example, if you enter 11,000.3 in cell A1 and select 0.00E+00 (scientific notation) from the Type list, the value in cell will then be displayed as 1.10E+04. The value displayed in the data entry bar (11000.3) will be used for all calculations.
To set a number format:
Select the cell(s) you want to configure. Note that if you want to select the whole sheet, you can click the Select All button.
Choose Sheet > Format and View > Custom Number. Select the format you want to use from the Type list.
Cells in the same spreadsheet can use different formats. To revert selected cells to the default number format, select All and General.
Note that if you apply a custom number format to the cell (e.g., 0, 0.00, #, ##0, etc.), the selected format has priority over the displayed math precision setting in both the control panel and Calculation page of the Application Setup (File > Application Setup > Calculations).
