This chapter focuses on the software features that apply specifically to using the NSWC standard. For general information about using the prediction folio for any type of standard (e.g., how to create folios, build system configurations, etc.), see Prediction Folios.
The NSWC-07 standard (Handbook of Reliability Prediction Procedures for Mechanical Equipment) was issued by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division on July 31, 2007. It provides reliability prediction models for mechanical components, such as seals, springs, pumps, valves, brakes and more.
Many of the failure rate models described in the NSWC standard are in fact assemblies that are composed of several subcomponents. In Lambda Predict, you can add these assemblies via the Select a Component window. When you add an assembly to the system hierarchy, the relevant components are also automatically added. The following list itemizes the components that are included in each assembly:
Accumulator [Assembly] includes the seal, spring, actuator, valve and cylinder wall components.
Brake [Assembly] includes the bearing, actuator, brake friction lining, seal, spring and housing or casing components.
Clutch [Assembly] includes the bearing, actuator, clutch friction lining, seal and spring components.
Compressor [Assembly] includes the pump shaft, bearing, valve, seal and compressor fluid driver components.
Coupling [Assembly] includes the seal, gear and housing or casing components.
Motor [Assembly] includes the bearing, motor brush, motor winding, shaft, gear, and housing or casing components.
Pump [Assembly] includes the seal, pump shaft, bearing, housing or casing and pump fluid driver components.
Slider Crank Mechanism [Assembly] includes the bearing, static seal, shaft, actuator and dynamic seal components.
Universal Joint [Assembly] includes the gear, seal, bearing and fastener components.
Valve [Assembly] includes the valve, seal, spring, solenoid and housing or casing components.
